Aveda Scholarship Awarded

Event Date

Monday, March 17, 2008

On Sunday, 10 February 2008 MWSF and the Aveda Institute partnered to have a benefit event to honor the “Heroes behind the Heroes”. The event was very successful due to all the sponsors, warriors, volunteers, family and friends that have hearts as big as Texas that wanted to say thank you to the spouses/caretakers of our wounded warriors. From the proceeds of this event, a full-ride scholarship came to fruition and a spouse will be able to get an education for FREE and start a career. We simply wanted to say “THANK YOU” to our “Heroes behind the Heroes”! This is just the beginning of the great things we have in store for thanking our true “Heroes behind the Heroes”!

The Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF) awarded a full-ride education scholarship to the Aveda Institute to Micaela Camargo “Michelle” on February 26th at a local benefit dinner held at Estancia at Thunder Valley in Boerne, Texas. Michelle was selected for the prestigeos scholarship worth approx. $17,000, based on an interview and essay she wrote about how she will put the scholarship to use for her family in order to start a career.

Her husband SGT David Camargo was injured in combat in Iraq and is undergoing rehabilitation here in San Antonio. Michelle said upon presentation of the award by Major General (Ret) Leroy Sisco and Aveda’s Institute Director Holly Zapata, “now I will be able to start a career of my own to help support our family”. The Camargo family has fallen in love with San Antonio and now considers South Texas their permanent home.

Over the next few months MWSF will be awarding several full-ride scholarships to University of Central Florida a 4 year university in Orlando, Florida. The scholarships will include housing, full tuition, civilian sector integration services and part-time job placement. MWSF is a non-profit organization based in San Antonio, Texas and was founded in 2007 by General Sisco and several tremendous supporters of our Military Warriors. The organization is raising awareness and money through a series of support building public events. The events are designed to help facilitate restoration of injured soldiers and their families whom have been injured in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Some of the key supporters and sponsors of MWSF are Governor Rick Perry, Peter Holt, owner of the NBA San Antonio Spurs, Country and Western superstar Clay Walker, and Randy Carroll from KJ97. There are many other wonderful sponsors, volunteers and contributors that are dedicated and committed to the warriors and their families, including board members Dr. Eddie McCoy and Paul Lavoie.
